Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help maintain a cleaner chimney.

Seasoned Wood Is Key

Burning seasoned firewood is essential for keeping your flue cleaner. Seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months, reducing its moisture content. This type of wood burns hotter and creates less creosote buildup in your chimney.

Green or unseasoned wood contains high moisture, leading to cooler fires and increased creosote accumulation. Creosote is a sticky residue that can increase the risk of chimney fires, making seasoned wood a safer choice.

Choosing Hardwoods

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch are excellent choices for firewood. These woods are denser and burn slowly, producing more heat and less smoke compared to softwoods. This results in cleaner combustion and less creosote production.

Avoid burning softwoods such as pine, which tend to produce more smoke and creosote. Stick to hardwoods for a cleaner and more efficient fire.

Proper Storage Techniques

Store your firewood in a dry, ventilated area, raised off the ground to prevent moisture absorption. A well-organized woodpile with a cover on top but open sides assures the wood continues to dry while staying protected from the elements.

Checking your wood’s moisture level with a meter can help ensure it's ready to burn. Keeping your wood dry and well-seasoned supports a cleaner flue.
